چکیده

A new algorithm is developed for computing etAB, where A is an n× n matrix and B is n×n0 with n0 ≪ n. The algorithm works for any A, its computational cost is dominated by the formation of products of A with n× n0 matrices, and the only input parameter is a backward error tolerance. The algorithm can return a single matrix etAB or a sequence etkAB on an equally spaced grid of points tk. It uses the scaling part of the scaling and squaring method together with a truncated Taylor series approximation to the exponential. It determines the amount of scaling and the Taylor degree using the recent analysis of Al-Mohy and Higham [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 31 (2009), pp. 970–989], which provides sharp truncation error bounds expressed in terms of the quantities ‖Ak‖1/k for a few values of k, where the norms are estimated using a matrix norm estimator. Shifting and balancing are used as preprocessing steps to reduce the cost of the algorithm. Numerical experiments show that the algorithm performs in a numerically stable fashion across a wide range of problems, and analysis of rounding errors and of the conditioning of the problem provides theoretical support. Experimental comparisons with MATLAB codes based on Krylov subspace, Chebyshev polynomial, and Laguerre polynomial methods show the new algorithm to be sometimes much superior in terms of computational cost and accuracy. An important application of the algorithm is to exponential integrators for ordinary differential equations. It is shown that the sums of the form ∑p k=0 φk(A)uk that arise in exponential integrators, where the φk are related to the exponential function, can be expressed in terms of a single exponential of a matrix of dimension n+p built by augmenting A with additional rows and columns, and the algorithm of this paper can therefore be employed.

The Leja Method Revisited: Backward Error Analysis for the Matrix Exponential

The Leja method is a polynomial interpolation procedure that can be used to compute matrix functions. In particular, computing the action of the matrix exponential on a given vector is a typical application. This quantity is required, e.g., in exponential integrators. The Leja method essentially depends on three parameters: the scaling parameter, the location of the interpolation points, and th...

EPIRK-W and EPIRK-K time discretization methods

Exponential integrators are special time discretization methods where the traditional linear system solves used by implicit schemes are replaced with computing the action of matrix exponential-like functions on a vector. A very general formulation of exponential integrators is offered by the Exponential Propagation Iterative methods of Runge-Kutta type (EPIRK) family of schemes. The use of Jaco...

An EM Algorithm for Estimating the Parameters of the Generalized Exponential Distribution under Unified Hybrid Censored Data

The unified hybrid censoring is a mixture of generalized Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring schemes. This article presents the statistical inferences on Generalized Exponential Distribution parameters when the data are obtained from the unified hybrid censoring scheme. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators can not be derived in closed form. The EM algorithm for computing the ma...

A Krylov Subspace Algorithm for Evaluating the Φ-functions Appearing in Exponential Integrators

We develop an algorithm for computing the solution of a large system of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with polynomial inhomogeneity. This is equivalent to computing the action of a certain matrix function on the vector representing the initial condition. The matrix function is a linear combination of the matrix exponential and other functions related to the exponential (the so-c...

Norges Teknisk-naturvitenskapelige Universitet Expint — a Matlab 1 Package for Exponential Integrators

Recently, a great deal of attention has been focused on the construction of exponential integrators for semi-linear problems. In this paper we describe a matlab package which aims to facilitate the quick deployment and testing of exponential integrators, of Runge–Kutta, multistep and general linear type. A large number of integrators are included in this package along with several well known ex...
